Have you ever considered expanding your collection to include bank bonds?

We have come across a few lately. You can see them pictured to the left of this blog.

Bonds were sold in many different denominations by banks and governments. They could almost be considered works of art with a history. We have a Chinese Bank bond with a $20 denomination and an Estonian Bank bond with a $1,000 denomination on display as well as a couple of Confederate Bank bonds. Both Confederate bonds were sold in $500 denominations with one at 7 percent interest and one at 8 percent interest.

The Confederate bonds were debt securities sold by the Confederate government to finance its military and government operations. History buffs will be interested to know that these were sold in denominations ranging from $100 to $100,000 with interest rates ranging from 4 percent to 8 percent. The government was trying to keep inflation in check by limiting the amount of paper currency printed. Interest coupons were attached. Artwork on the bonds often featured Confederate leaders or military scenes.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution, passed after the Civil War, voided all Confederate debt. Today, documents like these have historical interest to collectors like you!

The foreign government bonds were sold in much the same way as the Confederate bonds. The Chinese bonds were used to fund massive public works projects and were often issued in foreign currencies. This bond from the Imperial government lost its value after 1911.

The Estonian bond was issued in 1927 to fund national monetary reform and attract foreign investments. Also issued in foreign denominations, it was due to mature in 1967. But after Soviet annexation in 1940, it went into default.
